The small Essex village of Great Bardfield was home to a wide range of highly-talented artists and creative people from the 1930s to the 1970s – these included Edward Bawden and (for a short time) Eric Ravilious and their talented wives. During the 1950s the artists had several “Open Days” when visitors from around the world came to see the artists and their houses, and to learn what the villagers made of their artistic compatriots. The village and its artists featured in a recent edition of Michael Portillo’s “Great British Railway Journeys”.
